The pace has stepped up for a new group who want to see Crewkerne become safer, healthier and more accessible through better provision for pedestrians, cyclists and people with limited mobility. Space4Crewkerne is currently putting together information on several proposals to address the traffic problem in the town centre and are working with Crewkerne Town Council to bid for money from Somerset County Council’s, Climate Emergency Fund. One of the group’s proposals is to set up a car-sharing club and they are inviting members of the community to complete a short survey on https://mailchi.mp/…/help-us-improve-traffic-in…to provide vital information about whether there is enough support in the town, to make this a viable proposition. Set up costs for this scheme would be around £25 for each person, to include the first year’s membership with hire costs estimated at £4 per hour, excluding mileage.
A spokesperson for Space4Crewkerne said: “This could help to reduce the number of cars parked in the town centre and encourage people to consider other ways to get into the town. For the cost of running your own car, you could rent an electric car from the car club for 10 hours each and every week. If you used it less than that, you’d be saving yourself money and saving the planet.” Space4Crewkerne is also hoping to bid for research on a new local bus route and has recently increased the group’s online presence with a new Facebook page, set up by Michael Fox.
