INTEREST IN JOINING DOORSTEP CAROLS GAINS MOMENTUM IN TOWN

Interest in joining Doorstep Carols on Wednesday December 16th is gaining momentum in Crewkerne. The festive singing event, to spread some much needed cheer, was initiated by two women in Shropshire but is spreading far and wide as more communities and local radio stations come on board. BBC Radio Somerset has confirmed that they will be broadcasting the event with presenter Charlie Taylor between 6 pm – 7 pm on 95.5 FM/ 1566 AM. A spokesperson for the local radio station said: “We are pleased you’re joining us in singing together on the 16th. How amazing would it be to have the whole country singing together on the night.”

Doorstep Carols originated from an idea by Katy Rink, editor of My Shrewsbury magazine, who teamed up with Beth Heath, director of Fun at Shropshire Festivals and after BBC Radio Shropshire offered to broadcast the carols on the night, they were joined by other BBC radio stations across the country. Sixteen well known carols have been chosen for the hour long radio programme, which will include favourites, Silent Night, Good King Wenceslas, Hark the Herald Angels Sign and O Little Town of Bethlehem, finishing with the upbeat Ding Dong Merrily on High, O Come all ye Faithful and Jingle Bells. The words to the carols and sheet music can be downloaded for free from www.doorstepcarols.co.uk, where you can also sign up to become a street co-ordinator in your local area. A donation of £2 for the charity Mind, is optional but would be much appreciated.

Doorstep Carols was first heard about in Crewkerne by Meg Rose, who is promoting the event among neighbours in the Barn Street area and friends in the town. Singing carols on your doorstep with household members in a social bubble and joining communities on the night, across the country, is a safe and joyful way to start the festive season and spread some seasonal cheer, in what has been a very difficult year for us all. Share the news of doorstep carols with your family, friends and neighbours. More information can be found on the Facebook page, Winter Carols on the Doorstep.
