The Christmas crib usually displayed on a plinth outside of Crewkerne Town Hall, will remain in storage this year. In a recent statement from Crewkerne Town Council, a spokesperson said: “The town council have made the sad decision not to install the crib on the plinth this year at the town hall. The council was unable to put it up at the same time as the Christmas tree, due to lockdown.
“Our ground staff were working within a bubble and as the crib is very heavy to move, it requires four people to get it on the trailer, which could only happen when lockdown had been lifted. It is a requirement that the crib, once it is installed on the plinth, is secured to the town hall by some hefty cables. Unfortunately, the council have been unable to hire the equipment to enable us to attach the cables safely. Councillor Best and the Deputy Town Clerk, have looked at the plinth and the hooks, to see if a ladder could be used, but the plinth is too high and the pavement is on a slope, so that it is too dangerous to do it that way.”
It is anticipated that this is a one-off and the crib should be able to re-appear for the festive celebrations in the town, during November and December 2021. Our featured photo taken by CHAT reporter Ana, shows the Christmas crib in place at Crewkerne Town Hall in December 2018.
